Middlesex Town Meeting 2026
Town Meeting Day occurs this year on Tuesday, March 3, and all voter activities in Middlesex will be held at the Rumney Memorial School on 433 Shady Rill Road.
Here are some things to know.
WHAT IS TOWN MEETING?
All Middlesex voters are invited to join in this democratic event! Middlesex’s Town Meeting begins on Tuesday, March 3 at 4:30 p.m.
Find the agenda (called the “Warning”), as well as the proposed budget, reports from town officers and much more, in our informative annual Middlesex Annual Report (a.k.a. the Town Report). It's mailed to every Middlesex household, and available on the Middlesex Town website.
Since 1762, town meeting has been the basic system of governance for Vermont towns. At Town Meeting, you can engage in democracy in its most direct form, speak on issues of interest to you, learn your neighbors’ viewpoints, make amendments, and vote. This is your opportunity to engage in a powerful New England democratic tradition, and an important way to meet your neighbors and learn what issues are most pressing in our community.
Only warned articles can be acted on at Town Meeting. If you’d like to learn about how to get items on the warning, and other details, find more info here.
WHAT ABOUT BALLOT VOTING?
In Middlesex, a pre-printed Australian ballot is used to vote for town officers and school-related matters. You can read sample ballots at the Middlesex Town website.
Be sure to check out the Middlesex Candidates Page for information about who's running for town office and what they think are the important issues. Note: You'll only find info on this page about Town candidates. (If anyone knows where to find comprehensive info about School candidates, we'd love to hear about it!)
This year, ballots on the above matters will be mailed to all Middlesex voters. You can mail back your ballot or drop it off at the town offices as marked on the envelope; or you can stop by Rumney School anytime between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3 to cast your ballot in person. Questions? Contact the Town Clerk at (802) 223-5915).
WILL THERE BE A TOWN MEETING SUPPER?
Yes! Directly after Town Meeting is over, all are encouraged to stay at the school for a free, delicious Town Meeting Supper with lasagna, salad, fresh Red Hen bread, and a variety of desserts. (Vegetarian, GF and dairy-free options will be available.) Thanks to the Middlesex Community Fund, dinner is free for all! Any who wish to make a donation will benefit the Community Fund.
Calling all bakers and treat-makers! You’re invited to show off your creative talents by bringing your favorite offering for the dessert potluck!
• WHAT IF I NEED A RIDE TO TOWN MEETING?
If you need a ride to town meeting, please call Dave Shepard at (802) 229-1744.
• WILL THERE BE FREE TOWN MEETING CHILDCARE?
Yes! Childcare for kids ages 5 and older will be available free of charge at Rumney School on Tuesday, March 3 from 4:15-7:15 pm so that parents can attend Middlesex's Town Meeting. Pre-registration is required. Space is limited so be sure to reserve a spot before school break (deadline Friday, 2/20). Dinner is included. Thanks to the Middlesex Community Fund for their support! For more information, please contact Kimberly Bolduc, Community Connections, 802-223-7936 x305, or email [email protected].
Middlesex never wants the cost of child care to be a barrier to participating in Town Meeting. If you have kids under age 5 and you need a childcare stipend, please contact Brigid Browning, Middlesex Community Fund, 802-249-5198, [email protected] .
• CAN I WATCH TOWN MEETING FROM AFAR?
Yes. If you can’t make it to Middlesex’s Town Meeting in person this year, ORCA Media will livestream the meeting so you can watch and listen online. Find the Middlesex Town Meeting at https://www.orcamedia.net/show/middlesex-town-meeting-2026-live .
Please note that due to statutory restrictions, this is not an interactive link (no ability to speak or vote).
Historical note: Middlesex residents may recall that for many years (2008-2020) the Middlesex Solutions Committee facilitated remote town meeting participation (including speaking and voting) for those who could not attend due to health/mobility issues or public service. However, towns have been advised by the Vermont Secretary of State’s Office and Vermont League of Cities and Towns to pause this practice until statutes are updated. We’ll bring back the remote town meeting participation option as soon as we can!
• HOW CAN I GET INFORMED AHEAD OF TIME?
Great background reading! Check out the Middlesex Annual Report for comprehensive reports from committees, a budget breakdown, and lots of details on the issues we’ll be discussing at Town Meeting. The town report is mailed to every Middlesex household, or you can read it now on the Middlesex Town website.
• WOW, THANKS! ANY OTHER GREAT TIPS?
Here are a few other great Middlesex resources, now and year-round:
